The short version

Who we are

TLTBE (This Life To Be Experienced) is an independent publication made by its founder, Rogelio, in Bakersfield, California. Questions about this page go to hello@tltbe.com.

What we collect

When you read the site. To know which stories people read, we count page views anonymously: the page, the site or newsletter link that brought you there, and whether you're on a phone, tablet or computer. We don't store your IP address, your browser's details, a cookie or any ID, so we can't tell one reader from another or follow you from one visit to the next. Your browser keeps a small note for the length of your visit (in session storage, gone when you close the tab) so we count the first page of a visit only once. If your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, we don't count your visit at all.

To stop floods of fake page views and sign-ups, our database briefly keeps a scrambled version of your connection's internet address (a salted hash that can't be turned back into the address): one hour for page views, one day for sign-ups. Our web host also keeps standard technical logs, such as IP address, browser and the page requested, to run and protect the site. We don't use them to identify anyone.

When you join the Sunday Edit. Your email address, the page you signed up on, when you signed up, when we sent your welcome email, and a random code that makes your personal unsubscribe link work. When someone signs up, the founder is sent an email notice with the address.

When you write to us. Whatever you choose to send, so we can reply.

Cookies, Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

The magazine at tltbe.com sets no cookies. We don't follow anyone across other websites, and we honor Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control by not counting those visits at all.

How we use it

We don't use your email for advertising and we never add you to anyone else's list.

Who handles it for us

A few companies run parts of TLTBE for us and only use your information to do that job:

We may also share information if the law requires it. We don't sell or "share" personal information for advertising, as those words are used in California law.

Your choices

How long we keep it

Your email stays for as long as you're subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep only your address and the date you left, so you're never emailed again by mistake; ask and we'll delete that too. Page counts are kept for about two years. A copy of the subscriber list is saved each week on the founder's own computer as a backup and treated the same way.

Security

Everything travels over encrypted connections, and only the founder can see the subscriber list, signing in with a password and a two-step code. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable care.

Children

TLTBE isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has signed up, write to us and we'll delete it.

Changes

If this page changes, the new version goes here with a new date. If the change matters, we'll also say so in the Sunday Edit.
